1st one - That was a billing issue at the server end.  That was rectified and websites were restored to full working order

2nd one - Server admin will install a security patch which will lead to some server downtime expected to be no more than an hour.  There is no timeframe given as to when the update is to begin.

Server migration is complete.

There were a few issues encountered.  DNS servers became out of date so internal domain name pathing needed moving around AND namesevers too.

But nameservers will take up to 48 hours to get to global DNS Servers.

Also there's an IPV6 IP address that was no longer needed so that was removed.

IF there is continued problems then we'll move nameservers to Cloudflare servers.

Greetings all,

    Due to the transition of new server technology.  I'm upgrading the server to a new Cloud Server since the old one has become old.  Therefore there is a server backup in progress and then a server migration.

What's to happen is:

1) Backup of all websites and databases.
2) Migration of all the websites and databases to the new server
3) IP address to be moved across
4) Then repair websites as and when I'm emailed.

Bottom line is 2 servers in use and I hope it will go swimmingly well provided no one is uploading files at the moment.
1) and 2) are in process as I send this but 1) will take a while to complete.
3) Will be done immediately after the previous 2.

Then left over database updates will be refetched

Daily.co.uk are carrying out some data migration because they were acquired by Paragon.  Hopefully this should affect the running of SFUK as we sit on another server host but the domain name sit on daily.co.uk.  This will happen on 24th September.

Nova websites functions on the following parameters

The web browser calls for the index.php file. - the server is configured to browse straight to the index.pho rather than index.html therefore a splash page isn't needed.  But if one is required then the site owner can log into the plesk control panel to remove the index.php option.

Nova file permissions - all files and folders are set according to security but site owners are responsible for their own file security and backups.  Even though the server websites are backed up with or without notification.

Nova Database - Nova stores posts, bios, site settings etc on the MySQL database.  This is also backed up but again, site owners responsibility to back up their databases.

So transferring to StarFleetUK.

Potential site owners need access to either the backup database and files from the previous hosting provider.  If not, by use of ftp, download the entire filesystem off the server to their local computer.  Search for any htaccess files and remove them.

Potential site owners need to use phpmyadmin and back up the database to an SQL file or a gzip file.  Databases can be very tricky as this server is regularly updated except for the plesk control panel.  (Messes up the server locality when that's performed).  It is assumed that other hosting providers are running different versions of php and MySQL so migration of data gets troublesome but not impossible.

When databases are being uploaded, they may fail.  Therefore potential site owners can email me the sql file and I'll do them.

I've applied this to the server and it should affect everyone.  I slightly got confused with what part of Cloudflare I should register details where one required a nameserver change and the other didn't.  But it's all set correctly and the nameservers were reset to how they should be according to the server admins.
Because I haven't used the updated version of Cloudflare, I used a simple account but never used it fully; so I went back in, found the sites on there but it wasn't corresponding to the requirements of the Plesk control panel.  So it had taken more fiddling than anticipated.

There were two types, a partner account and a normal account; as I had a legacy login for the normal account, it required me to change the nameservers so it goes through their servers first, then back to the server default.  So I momentarily changed them to those; however the Plesk control panel didn't like the setup.  Therefore I had to create the partner account to which half of it worked, so I had to remove everything off the normal account, move to the partner account and change the nameservers back to the server default.  Then it all worked.

In short, some people's websites will come up immediately and others will be within 24 hours.

Stop the hacker.

Been a member of these for quite a while and are related to Cloudflare.

A server backup is in progress.  Your sites wont be affected.

If anyone requires a backup schedule email ie there own place to receive backup data.  Then feel free to email and I shall set one up; it's in test mode at present until I can fine tweak the settings.  So if one is made, don't be surprised when there's an error or the backup is overwritten.  I have created a sub-domain http://backup.starfleetuk.net to store database and filesystem.  But if I can find a better solution then I shall announce it.

Feel free to look at the new front page.

The other pages, I wont bother with.  They seem okay; the front page was getting quite decadent.  The join pages require work providing formtools is more configurable.
Domain name issuing is pending but we'll get there.

Added a feature to do with incoming http requests.  If anyone suffers any outages then I'll know what it is (remove the mod).  It was an addon with the Plesk control panel so I hope that it's useful to website security.  If not then I'll just remove it.

Domain name move is complete.  For those had suffered an outage.  That was rectified.

Here's the events

Domain name starfleetuk.net was registered via the same registrar that the server is hosted on just to start putting domain names and server hosting with one company.  Unfortunately in the 'UK equivalent of a US company, .net domain names are not entitled to WHOIS privacy in the UK but that problem is only relevant to this one.  So it was reverted to domain name registrar with one UK company and server data with another.  So the domain name was transferred to the regular registrar that I usually use.

To transfer registrar takes 7 days and I was expecting nothing to be changed at nameserver level.
Authority is given at one registrar and is approved at the other registrar.
On the last day, the registrar transfer is complete and an email is sent.
The sites under starfleetuk.net sub-domain suffer an outage when starfleetuk.net drops off the domain listing on one registrar and appears on the other.
So the domain name needed to be re-added to the server as an external domain name rather than an internal domain name.  Once the domain name has been re-added, then the whole server system, internal nameservers register that and everything works.

Job done.

Hello,

     In light of the previous experiences.  Next year, certain new and all the long serving members will be offered a full domain name initially for 2 years but registered to SFUK and then after that; will be offered over to the member to continue running.  The reason I'm keeping hold of the domain name is due to the length of time that sims survive where as only a few survive longer than a year.  But I plan to keep at least 10 domain names for reissue to new members or old members that wish to rename their sim.  I would like to consider it as a belated thanksgiving offering but I'll get over xmas and start the new year a fresh.  Also, the main website and submissions will need redecorating.  The main website is quite archaic so something new is in pipeline.  (Somewhere on my hard drive being tinkered).
